1,2-Dichloroethane is a colorless liquid with a pleasant smell and sweet taste. With a purity of 99.9% EDC, it is flammable at high temperatures. Widely used in the chemical industry for the production of PVC and in the manufacture of solvents, it is also found in household cleaning products and insecticides.

Manufactured and traded in liquid form, dichloroethane is obtained with a reaction of chlorine with ethylene at low temperatures, with the presence of iron and oxygen. In a later stage, the product is purified with the removal of organic and inorganic impurities.
