Sodium Hydroxide, known as Caustic Soda, is essential in industry, especially in the production of chlorine and alkali by electrolysis. Its applications include papermaking, detergents and cleaning products, as well as being used in water and food treatment processes. It is also present in everyday life, in cleaning products and in the food industry.
The manufacturing of this product at Unipar takes place in the Cubatão and Bahía Blanca plants. In Brazil, commercial Liquid Caustic Soda is produced in a type of electrolytic cell where brine flows from one compartment to the other through porous layer (diaphragm). In Argentina, there are two electrolysis cell units: one using the mercury cathode technology (Rayon liquid soda) and the other one using the electrolyzer technology with a two-pole membrane (Membrane liquid soda).
Given its alkaline properties (a chemical opposite of the acids), it plays an important role in pH neutralization and adjustment in several segments, including the regeneration of ion-exchange resins. Among its major applications, it is used for paper and pulp clarification, and also widely used in the chemical and petrochemical industry, in metallurgy (production of alumina for the aluminum industry), soap and detergent, the textile industry (mercerization) and food processing.
